Development of a Simple and Novel Digital Twin Framework for Industrial Robots in Intelligent robotics manufacturing

This paper has proposed an easily replicable and novel approach for developing a Digital Twin (DT) system for industrial robots in intelligent manufacturing applications. Our framework enables effective communication via Robot Web Service (RWS), while a real-time simulation is implemented in Unity 3D and Web-based Platform without any other 3rd party tools. The framework can do real-time visualization and control of the entire work process, as well as implement real-time path planning based on algorithms executed in MATLAB. Results verify the high communication efficiency with a refresh rate of only $17 ms$. Furthermore, our developed web-based platform and Graphical User Interface (GUI) enable easy accessibility and user-friendliness in real-time control.


Future-Proofing Mobile Networks: A Digital Twin Approach to Multi-Signal Management

Digital Twins (DTs) are set to become a key enabling technology in future wireless networks, with their use in network management increasing significantly. We developed a DT framework that leverages the heterogeneity of network access technologies as a resource for enhanced network performance and management, enabling smart data handling in the physical network. Tested in a Campus Area Network environment, our framework integrates diverse data sources to provide real-time, holistic insights into network performance and environmental sensing. We also envision that traditional analytics will evolve to rely on emerging AI models, such as Generative AI (GenAI), while leveraging current analytics capabilities. This capacity can simplify analytics processes through advanced ML models, enabling descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics in a unified fashion. Finally, we present specific research opportunities concerning interoperability aspects and envision aligning advancements in DT technology with evolved AI integration.

Digital Twin for Autonomous Surface Vessels for Safe Maritime Navigation

Autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) play an increasingly important role in the safety and sustainability of open sea operations. Since most maritime accidents are related to human failure, intelligent algorithms for autonomous collision avoidance and path following can drastically reduce the risk in the maritime sector. A DT is a virtual representative of a real physical system and can enhance the situational awareness (SITAW) of such an ASV to generate optimal decisions. This work builds on an existing DT framework for ASVs and demonstrates foundations for enabling predictive, prescriptive, and autonomous capabilities. In this context, sophisticated target tracking approaches are crucial for estimating and predicting the position and motion of other dynamic objects. The applied tracking method is enabled by real-time automatic identification system (AIS) data and synthetic light detection and ranging (Lidar) measurements. To guarantee safety during autonomous operations, we applied a predictive safety filter, based on the concept of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). The approaches are implemented into a DT built with the Unity game engine. As a result, this work demonstrates the potential of a DT capable of making predictions, playing through various what-if scenarios, and providing optimal control decisions according to its enhanced SITAW.

Abstract: Digital twin (DT) technologies have emerged as a solution for real-time data-driven modeling of cyber physical systems (CPS) using the vast amount of data available by Internet of Things (IoT) networks. In this position paper, we elucidate unique characteristics and capabilities of a DT framework that enables realization of such promises as online learning of a physical environment, real-time monitoring of assets, Monte Carlo heuristic search for predictive prevention, on-policy, and off-policy reinforcement learning in real-time. We establish a conceptual layered architecture for a DT framework with decentralized implementation on cloud computing and enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) services for modeling, event detection, and decision-making processes. The DT framework separates the control functions, deployed as a system of logically centralized process, from the physical devices under control, much like software-defined networking (SDN) in fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. We discuss the moment of the DT framework in facilitating implementation of network-based control processes and its implications for critical infrastructure. To clarify the significance of DT in lowering the risk of development and deployment of innovative technologies on existing system, we discuss the application of implementing zero trust architecture (ZTA) as a necessary security framework in future data-driven communication networks.
